The Art of Chinese Landscape Painting

For centuries, Chinese artists have captured the spirit of nature through expressive brushwork, ink and colour. In traditional Chinese painting, learning to paint landscapes was not simply about copying what we see, but about understanding the structure of mountains and rocks, the rhythm of brushstrokes, and the subtle balance between ink, water and empty space.

This artistic knowledge was carefully recorded and passed down through generations. One famous example is The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting (芥子园画谱), a traditional painting manual that organised complex techniques into practical examples and step-by-step methods. It helped generations of artists learn how to depict mountains, trees, rocks and other elements of a traditional Chinese landscape.
